World Mental Health Day: A Mother’s Reflection on Emotional Well-being in Corporate Life

Today, on World Mental Health Day, we are reminded that mental well-being isn’t a one-day observance. It’s a practice, a nurturing, a daily intention.

As a working professional and an expecting mother stepping into my sixth month of pregnancy, I realize more deeply how emotional well-being in corporate life is not just an individual responsibility — it’s a shared ecosystem between families and workplaces.

The Emotional Connection Between Pregnancy & Presence
From the fifth month onward, science confirms that a baby begins to sense the mother’s emotions — her joy, stress, calm, and even chaos. The baby learns to recognize voices, respond to heartbeats, and connect with the father’s touch.

  • A father’s consistent presence — his voice, his conversations, his touch — builds emotional safety for both mother and child.

  • Absence, often due to corporate responsibilities, deadlines, or travel, can unintentionally create a void that no video call can replace.

This isn’t about paternity leave policies or HR frameworks. It’s about presence, balance, and human connection beyond performance metrics.

Mental Health in the Corporate World
Corporate wellness programs often focus on productivity, efficiency, and benefits. Yet true wellness means understanding the emotional ecosystem employees live in.

  • Work-life balance isn’t enough.

  • What we need is work-life presence — the assurance that employees can dedicate time to work without being robbed of emotional presence at home.

Why Presence Matters for Mental Health

Mental health during pregnancy — and in any life stage — is not about forced positivity. It’s about emotional safety, being seen, and being supported.

As Dan Millman wisely said:

“You don’t have to control your thoughts; you just have to stop letting them control you.”

Presence — whether from a leader, a partner, or an organization — nurtures confidence, stability, and emotional well-being.

Call to Action for Leaders & Organizations
On this World Mental Health Day, I want to remind every leader, every organization, and every partner:

  • Mental health isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity.

  • Presence isn’t a perk; it’s a lifeline.

  • For a child growing within, love and presence are not just felt — they are remembered.

Let’s create workplaces that are not just efficient but human, homes that are not just safe but nurturing, and lives that value presence over performance.
